“Internationally accredited” is one of the most overused phrases in medical tourism or for medical value travel. Sometimes it is accurate. Sometimes it is not. Here is how you can check it yourself in about ten minutes, using only free public resources.

The Accreditations That Actually Matter in India

JCI (Joint Commission International) is one of the most respected global hospital accreditations. Hospitals across many countries use it as a benchmark for patient safety, care quality and hospital processes.
It is also closely linked to the standards followed by many leading hospitals in the US.

NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers) is India’s national accreditation body, under the Quality Council of India. It is a rigorous accreditation built around Indian healthcare standards. A hospital does not need JCI accreditation to be excellent. NABH accreditation is still a strong and meaningful baseline to look for when evaluating hospitals in India.

Some hospitals hold both. Either is a legitimate signal; neither should be taken on faith without checking.

How to Verify Accreditation

JCI has a public directory where you can search for accredited hospitals worldwide. Search using the hospital’s exact legal name, not only the brand name used in marketing.
Some hospital groups use a different legal name from their public brand. Also check that the accreditation is active and not expired.

For NABH, check the public list published by the Quality Council of India. This list is updated regularly and shows NABH-accredited hospitals.
Cross-check the hospital’s name and location directly on the list. Do not rely only on an accreditation logo shown on the hospital’s website, as logos can remain online even after accreditation has lapsed.

Verify the doctor, not just the hospital

Hospital accreditation is important, but it does not confirm the credentials of the doctor treating you. The doctor should also be verified separately.
Every practicing doctor in India must be registered with the Medical Council of India (now the National Medical Commission) or their relevant State Medical Council.

Questions Worth Asking Directly

• Is this accreditation for the entire hospital or only for a specific department?
• Can I see the accreditation certificate directly, not just the logo on your website?
• How many procedures like mine has this specific doctor performed?
• Is the doctor being quoted the same doctor who will actually perform my procedure?

The last question is especially important. In some cases, a senior doctor may appear in the hospital’s marketing material, but another doctor may perform the actual procedure.

What Accreditation Doesn't Guarantee

Accreditation is a meaningful quality signal, but it is not a guarantee of outcome. No accreditation can remove medical risk completely. Every procedure carries some level of risk, whether it happens in India or anywhere else in the world.
What accreditation does show is that the hospital has been independently checked against defined standards for safety, hygiene and hospital processes. If those standards are not maintained, the hospital can lose its accreditation.

The Bottom Line

Verifying accreditation takes only a few minutes and costs nothing. There is no reason to skip it. Check the hospital on the JCI and NABH public databases. Verify your specific doctor’s registration independently. Do not rely only on logos or claims made in marketing material.
