Healing Beyond Borders

My name is Aman Prateek. It was the year 2011 and I was 16 when my mother was diagnosed with cancer.

The news shattered our family. We were not short of love for her. We were short of everything else. Information, guidance, a process to follow, someone to tell us where to begin. We did not know which doctor to trust, which hospital to approach, or what questions to even ask. We were just a family standing at the edge of something enormous, with no hand to hold us through it.

India held us together.

The doctors who treated her were not just clinically present. They were humanly present. The nurses who comforted her through the hard nights understood that care is not just treatment. It is dignity. It is someone explaining what is happening when your mind is too frightened to process it alone. It is being made to feel that you matter, not just as a patient, but as a person. Those doctors, those nurses, those quietly extraordinary people gave my family hope when we had none.

My mother got her second chance at life. That experience shaped mine.

In the years since, I have sat with other families going through exactly what mine went through. I see parents trying to stay strong for someone they are terrified of losing. I see siblings holding on to hope with both hands. I see patients who simply want one clear answer and one real chance at the right treatment. Every time, I recognise something in their eyes that I knew in my own at 16.
